The Break (members of Midnight Oil & Violent Femmes)
Thursday February 18th
Harp Hotel, Wollongong
$18 + bf
It's a union that will delight music fans, surf rats, and festival goers alike. Midnight Oil's Rob Hirst, Jim Moginie and Martin Rotsey have joined with bass player Brian Ritchie of US group Violent Femmes to form a new surf rock band called The Break. The Break will kick things off with a short stint of gigs in Sydney and surrounds with further dates elsewhere to follow in the coming months. The Break's album is a unique blend of pulsating psycho surf rock tunes featuring 15 mostly instrumental tracks. The bulk of the album tracks are named after legendary surf breaks. ‘Cylinders’, the first single from the album, was in fact one of the first tracks created, and will be available from iTunes Australia from Tuesday February 9th. World renowned producer Nick Launay, who of course has worked on many Midnight Oil releases and numerous other renowned acts including Silverchair, Nick Cave and PiL, took ‘Cylinders’ to the mixing desk in a Los Angeles studio to create a mix highlighting the driving guitars and a pounding back beat synonymous with both the surf rock genre and the classic Oils sound.

Jonathan Boulet + guests
Wednesday February 24th
Harp Hotel, Wollongong
$12 + bf
Sydney smart alec Jonathan Boulet will kick off his virgin headline tour of Australia in February 2010 in support of his wondrously vivid self-titled debut record, out now on Modular Recordings. The pied piper of bedroom pop will lead his band of the merriest men around the country for 14 of the best, kicking off at the Northcote Social Club in Melbourne on February 12 and snaking his way around the country before triumphantly crossing the finish line at Fans in Brisbane on March 13. Since his emergence in late 2009 with the dashing life-affirming micro-symphony that is A Community Service Announcement and one of the most promising, self-assured debut albums of the year, Jonathan Boulet has slowly but surely converted the masses through a series of compelling, heavy energy live shows. His joyous explosion of a debut was a feature album on Triple J, the video for A Community Service Announcement was very publicly endorsed by the one and only Kanye West (“Watch this it’s fucking amazing”), and his first ever tour was in support of fellow Modular do-gooders Tame Impala. In short, an excellent start to a potentially brilliant career.

------------------------------------------------- IMPEDANCE RECORDS UPDATE
Hytest have completed work on their much anticipated debut full length album. The first single will be available on line in March with the album to follow a little later. Some exciting tour news in the Hytest camp will be announced soon. We are also set to announce a few more forthcoming releases but in the meantime, the next releases available are :
Priestess 'Prior To The Fire' (OUT FEBRUARY)
We are pleased to announce the release of the Australia/New Zeland version of the new album from Canada's Priestess titled 'Prior To The Fire' in February on Impedance Records. The band from Montreal are one of the most talked about heavy rock bands in the world following an appearance on Guitar Hero : Greatest Hits and supports with the likes of Black Label Society, Converge, Megadeth, Mastodon and Motorhead. Following much acclaim of their debut album 'Hello Master', the band worked hard in the studio with producer David Schiffman (System of a Down, Mars Volta, Nine Inch Nails) to lay down the amazing results we hear on 'Prior To The Fire'.
The Mojomatics 'Don't Pretend That You Know Me' (OUT MARCH)
We were first tipped off about these guys by The New Christs and then recently got to witness them for ourselves live at a small club in the north of Italy. After two albums released on European indie label Alien Snatch, the duo from Venice in Italy have blossomed further a field with the release of their latest full length ‘Don’t Pretend That You Know Me’. Recently touring the US where they shared stages with The Black Lips, Rocky Erickson, Jay Reatard and The Dirtbombs among others, The Mojomatics are fast becoming one of the coolest new names in garage rock. Well, garage might not be the right term as they effortlessly heap together hillbilly blues, old country, folk and bluegrass, inject it with the melody of British Invasion pop, and fire it all out with the breakneck energy of the best garage/punk/rock 'n' roll. Check the video to their lead track 'Wait A While' :
In tour news Nick Oliveri continues his solo tour across America at the moment, while the first dates for Buggirl's US tour have been announced. Mondo Generator have been confirmed for Hellfest in France this coming northern summer and will do their first European tour in a number of years in June/July. There is a new Impedance web site on the way, check www.impedancerecords.com regularly.
