The history of Music Farmers
Music Farmers is an ever evolving entity which was started in early 2004.
Originally set up as a distribution company that also ran an in house record label called Trans Electric, the business has gone through a number of transitions since those early days.
In late 2004, we decided to open a small retail shop in central Wollongong. It was officially opened in the central chambers arcade on December 8th 2004. As time went by the retail side of the operations overtook the distribution side of things and the Trans Electric record label became simply the Music Farmers label.
In 2005 there was also a shift to live music as the Music Farmers team took over exclusive band bookings for Wollongong's leading original live music venue, The Oxford Tavern. They finished this at the end of 2006 when the venue changed ownership and management.
In early 2007, the restrictions of the small space led Music Farmers down an either/or path - close the retail shop or find a bigger space that could be turned into a venue as well as a shop. The latter option was the one taken and work began in March of that year on converting an old warehouse in Crown Lane into a shop/venue, there have also been moments it has been a cafe and art gallery.
As the popularity of the place as a live music and party venue increased and CD sales in general declined rapidly(vinyl stayed strong), the next evolution of Music Farmers began as the retail of operations was scaled down.
With everything in place and the business in its strongest position to date, there was yet another twist to the Music Farmers story when in October 2008, Wollongong City Council ordered live music to cease based on a noise complaint and outlined a number of issues that needed to be addressed for Music Farmers to continue as a venue. Unfortunately some of these were impossible to address and the decision was made to close Music Farmers as a venue and retail shop.
While Music Farmers continues to operate as a specialist on-line retailer and part time record label, its operations have been scaled down during 2009. Co-founder Jeb Taylor is now co-owner of both Impedance Records and Various Industries, while Simon Dalla Pozza is based overseas and continues work in graphic design. One day a new shop may spring up, or some new direction may take shape but for the moment things are busy elsewhere.
