what's on

Music Farmers co-owner Jeb Taylor writes a weekly column covering the Illawarra music scene in the 'What's On' newspaper, we'll also be posting it here on-line so people who don't get the paper delivered (it is free to most houses throughout the Illawarra and south coast) can still see it.

• A few weeks back I wrote about an upcoming harbour cruise featuring local bands Life Adjustment Disorder and Speedwell. The day was a huge success with tickets selling out well in advance. After Sydney band Feed The Horse opened the day, northern suburbs band Speedwell hit the stage on a rainy, but calm day on Sydney Harbour. While these guys are by no means groundbreaking they certainly churn out the old fashioned rock n roll in a solid way that fans of The Stooges and The Rolling Stones will appreciate. Life Adjustment Disorder on the other hand doesn’t follow any rules, genre hopping from song to song and even within songs without loosing any focus, the band is certainly creating their own brand of sound. I’d recommend anyone looking for some good old fashioned rock to keep an eye on gig guides for Speedwell, while if you are looking for something a little left of centre, make sure you get along and see Life Adjustment Disorder. And if you ever get the chance to go and see some bands on a harbour cruise, make sure you do it.

• Wollongong bred and now Sydney based outfit The Shipwrecked continue to build momentum on the Sydney scene in the lead up to the release of their debut album. Armed with a catalogue of well crafted indie songs the band has released a free digital teaser song ‘Archway’ which is available now at www.myspace.com/theshipwrecked. If you want to catch the band live, they are at the Oxford Tavern on Saturday March 8th.

• One lucky Wollongong artist will get the chance to be the opening band on the huge Union Of Soul show at Wollongong Botanic Gardens which takes place on Sunday March 16th. The event features John Butler Trio, Clare Bowditch and the Feeding Set, Lior and Gotye. A live final to select the overall winner will be held at UniBar on Thursday March 13th so get along and support the artists and see who gets to share the stage with some of Australia’s finest artists. Tickets to the Union Of Soul show are on sale now from usual outlets.
